We’re getting good at escaping Lilongwe in the weekends. It doesn’t matter so much where we go, as soon as we hit the M1, we feel like we are really in Malawi. It’s great to be on the road, surrounded by all that beautiful scenery, and away from the walls and barbed wire and traffic.
The highlight of the weekend was when Henry, a man we met in Dedza who is the owner of a small arts and crafts shop, invited us to his home for dinner. We met his beautiful wife and two daughters and ate nsima with pumpkin leaves. After dinner they walked us back to our campsite in the dark. It was the first genuine gesture we’ve experienced. There was no request for money and we felt truly privileged to be their guests.
