We went to the monthly farmers market at the Sanctuary Lodge last weekend. This market is one of the many paradoxes of life in Lilongwe, because it is a farmers market for expats by expats. I find it so strange that expats should need their own farmers market when there are two fantastic vegetable markets here that they can go to. At the same time, I kind of get why this was set up. There were things on offer that you can’t get anywhere else, like different varieties of lettuce, homemade cheese (we bought feta and it tastes almost like the real thing), and leeks. There were also people selling homemade jams, meats, bread and baobab oil skincare products. It was definitely a Western-style farmers market (complete with vendors in wool hats and plaid shirts) and we felt a little bit ashamed for liking it so much, but it was a pleasant break from our usual market trips.
